OPTIMA Batteries offers several battery upgrade options for owners of the 1996 Chevrolet Silverado pickup trucks. The choices are available in both REDTOPs and YELLOWTOPs and we'll run through the choices.

The D34/78 YELLOWTOP is the heaviest and most-expensive of the choices, but also offers the most reserve capacity and the ability to be deep-cycled. The D34/78 is a dual terminal battery, so connections can be made on the top or side posts. However, we only recommend connecting to the side posts for starting applications. Deep-cycle accessories, like winches, should be connected to the top terminals.

The 34/78 REDTOP has the same physical dimensions of the D34/78 YELLOWTOP, but is slightly lighter, less expensive than the D34/78 and only designed for SLI (starting/lighting/ignition) applications, so it should not be used in trucks with winches, aftermarket stereos, alarm systems, dash cams or other deep-cycle accessories. It will offer the most cranking amps and also has dual terminals for flexible mounting options.

The Group 78 REDTOP offers the same performance specifications (800 CCA, 50Ah) as the 34/78 REDTOP, but it only has side terminals and is slightly more expensive. As with all other REDTOPs, this battery is only designed for starting applications and is not designed or warrantied for deep-cycle use.

The D75/25 YELLOWTOP is physically smaller and lighter than the other batteries we have mentioned and has lower specifications (620 CCA. 48Ah), but still plenty of power to start the engines of just about any Chevy Silverado, while also offering the ability to be deep-cycled.

The 75/25 REDTOP matches the physical dimensions of the D75/25, but is slightly lighter and offers slightly more cranking amps and slightly less capacity (720CCA, 44Ah) than the D75/25. Like the other REDTOPs, this battery is only designed and warrantied for starting and not deep-cycle use, but it is the least-expensive option of the group.

Fully-charged, REDTOPs will measure about 12.6-12.8 volts and YELLOWTOPs will measure about 13.0-13.2 volts. Regardless of which battery type or size you select, you will maximize performance and lifespan, if you keep your battery fully-charged whenever possible. We're so confident this is the case, we'll add an additional year of free replacement warranty coverage on your OPTIMA battery purchase, if you buy an OPTIMA 1200 series charger from us at the same time!
