We spend nearly a full year searching for cars to invite and reviewing applications from hundreds of hopefuls for the OPTIMA Ultimate Street Car Invitational, presented by KN filters and Wilwood brakes, but we knew all about this car from day one. This beautiful 1969 AMC AMX is owned by Jimi Day, who just happens to be the event director of the OUSCI.
However, because of Jimi's race-day duties, he has deferred driving duty to the builder of record, Randy Johnson, of DZ Customs. Johnson is no stranger to the OUSCI, competing in the 2009 OUSCI with his '71 Chevrolet Camaro. Johnson has also been a fixture on the Pro-Touring scene and a regular at qualifying events around the country. It is safe to say Jimi Day's AMX will be in good hands.
So what has Randy been stuffing into the AMX? Check out this parts list:
GM Performance Parts LS3 (550 horsepower)
-Spectre Performance air intake system
-Heidt's Pro-G front suspension
-DZ Customs custom four link rear suspension
-Ridetech coilovers
-Wilwood 14-inch, six-piston full floating front brakes
-Wilwood four-piston full floating rear brakes
-Keisler RS600 transmission
-Centerforce DYAD twin disc clutch
-Rushforth Wheels
-BeCool radiator cooling system
-Vintage Air air conditioning and Frontrunner pulley system
-Autometer gauge package
-BF Goodrich KDW's
Other sponsors include Jimi's own company, FM3 Performance Marketing, Holley, OPTIMA Batteries, Racepak, Quicktime, iPerformance USA, Ricks Tanks, Vaporworx, Mac's custom tie downs, Gonzo Engineering, EVOD, Metrom Performance Parts, and Canton Accusump.
There is no question Randy Johnson is an experienced builder for cars of this genre and not a stranger to this type of competition either. However, the unknown on this car is whether it will be totally dialed in for the OUSCI. While many of the competitors, including defending OUSCI champion Mark Stielow, have spent the better part of a year dialing in their rides, Day's AMX will only have a few weeks worth of tuning before it arrives in Nevada.
