The 2024 Progressive King of the Hammers, presented by NITTO & powered by OPTIMA Batteries had about as much action and excitement as one could hope for in the world's toughest one-day offroad race. OPTIMA Batteries-sponsored Ultra4 racer, Loren Healy, got off to a great start and built up a commanding lead, until his power steering pump failed. We caught up to him at Remote Pit 2, where repairs were underway and it seemed he had lost so much time, he had gotten out of his vehicle and took his helmet off.
Raul Gomez seemed determined to three-peat as KOH champion, but instead found himself upside down and unable to right himself. Somehow, Healy managed to battle his way back to a sizable lead, only to suffer a catastrophic mechanical failure just a few miles from the finish line. That seemed to leave the door open for Kyle Chaney, who was hoping to become the first UTV driver to win this incredible race. However, Chaney completely blew out his front suspension and limped back into Hammertown, filling up his cockpit with sand, every time he hit a bump. Chaney also missed several VCPs (Virtual Check Points) and was assessed nearly an hour in time penalties.
Even without the penalties, it wouldn't have mattered, as JP Gomez managed to cross the finish line in just under six hours and twenty-eight minutes, which would've still been about nine minutes faster than Chaney, without any time penalties factored into the finish. The race claimed many casualties, as it does every year, seeing just 40 finishers cross the line in time, out of 117 listed on the starting grid.
