OPTIMA Batteries has long provided high-performance battery upgrades for the Chevy Blazer, going back to the K5 days. However, for the purposes of this blog, we're focusing on the late-model Chevy Blazers, which are a mid-sized crossover SUV, produced by Chevrolet since the 2019 model year. Interestingly enough, even though these modern Blazers are fall smaller than the full-sized SUVs they follow, the batteries in Blazers have never been larger!
Case in point, a 1983 K5 Blazer with a 6.2-liter diesel starts all day long with an OPTIMA REDTOP 75/25 battery that weighs in at just over 33 pounds. However, fast forward 40 years to a 2023 Blazer with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder gas engine and you'll need an OPTIMA DH7 YELLOWTOP that weighs in at more than 60 pounds! Why do newer Blazers with engines 68% smaller than the old K5 diesels need batteries that weigh 83% more?
It's certainly not a question of cranking power, but reserve capacity. Modern vehicles, like the Chevy Blazer are more demanding on batteries from an electrical standpoint. If you don't drive your Blazer regularly, or if you don't drive it for very long distances when you do drive it regularly, it's possible your vehicle's charging system is not keeping pace with its electrical consumption.
If you're reading this and the battery you need to replace in your Blazer is only a few years old, your driving habits may not allow your Blazer's charging system to keep your battery properly maintained. We recommend the batteries in all modern vehicles be topped off on a monthly basis, just to make sure they are maintaining proper voltage (a fully charged YELLOWTOP battery will measure about 13.0-13.2 volts). If your battery is close to or fully-charged on a monthly basis, you can expand that maintenance window. If it is consistently low, you may need to shorten that maintenance window further.
OPTIMA makes battery charging very easy with our modern, fully-automatic battery chargers and they do a great job of charging and maintaining modern 12-volt batteries. We're so confident good voltage maintenance will maximize battery performance and lifespan, we will add an additional year of free replacement warranty coverage on your OPTIMA battery, if you buy an OPTIMA 1200-series charger from us at the same time that you buy your OPTIMA battery from us.
