Mercedes Sprinter Battery

The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van typically uses a familiar battery, even if the location of the battery (usually under the driver's side floor) is a bit unusual. Most Mercedes Sprinter vans use either an H6 or H8 battery, also referred to as a Group 48 or 49, respectively. OPTIMA offers a direct-fit upgrade for the H6/Group 48 battery with our DH6 YELLOWTOP. Conservatively-rated at 800 cold cranking amps and 72 Ah, this battery will typically out-perform and out-last flooded options and batteries that don't use 99.99% pure virgin lead, even larger batteries.

If your Sprinter came with the Group 49/H7, you can still use an OPTIMA battery in that application, by using this adapter bracket from the Mercedes-Benz experts at Wiestec Engineering. As you can see from the fitment notes below, there are also some backup and auxiliary batteries in either a 1.2Ah size or 12Ah (Group 400) size, that OPTIMA also does not offer. If your local auto parts retailer does not carry those batteries, you may need to contact your local Mercedes-Benz service center.

There are also several fitment footnotes we'd like to decipher for you. the first is 45, which basically indicates the backup battery is not a typical BCI battery group size. Footnote 54 indicates the battery should be properly-vented to the outside atmosphere, for which all OPTIMA DH6 YELLOWTOP batteries have provisions. 

Footnote 66 indicates the CCA rating is the EN standard, which is more rigorous testing protocol than normal, but the DH6 YELLOWTOP's conservative rating of 800 CCA easily meets that standard (when we test them, we find they typically far exceed 800 CCA). The final footnote 69 indicates an AGM (absorbed glass mat) battery is required, which is also not an issue for OPTIMA, as all of our batteries use AGM technology.

A few things we want to mention about the DH6 YELLOWTOP battery. When fully-charged, that battery will measure about 13.0-13.2 volts. If your Sprinter doesn't see regular use, we recommend keeping the battery voltage properly-maintained with a quality battery maintenance device. Even if the Sprinter see regular use, we also recommend periodic charging with a quality battery charger, to maximize battery performance and lifespan. We're so confident this is true, we will extend the free-replacement warranty on your OPTIMA battery by a full year, if you purchase it from us at the same time as an OPTIMA Digital 1200 battery charger and maintainer.
