In many cases, the question of which OPTIMA battery is better doesn't come down to a REDTOP always being better than a YELLOWTOP or vice versa. What is most often comes down to is the application. Some OPTIMA batteries are only offered in REDTOP sizes, like the 6-volt battery. The same is true for YELLOWTOPs, where we only offer a D51R or Group 48/H6 battery in a YELLOWTOP.

In cases where consumers have a choice between batteries, like a D34/78 YELLOWTOP or a 34/78 REDTOP, the decision typically comes down to the application. If the vehicle is a bone-stock 1997 Chevy Silverado, a REDTOP will work just fine and will be slightly less expensive than a YELLOWTOP. However, if the vehicle is a Jeep Wrangler with a winch, car alarm, dash camera and aftermarket stereo, then a YELLOWTOP that is designed for both starting and deep-cycle use is the better choice.

Whatever color OPTIMA battery you end up with, make sure to keep it fully-charged (~12.6-12.8V for REDTOPs & ~13.0-13.2V for YELLOWTOPs) whenever possible. We're so confident proper voltage maintenance will maximize battery performance & lifespan, we'll add an additional year of free-replacement warranty coverage on your OPTIMA battery, if you buy a 1200-series OPTIMA charger from us when you buy your OPTIMA battery.
